The
Costa Maya, Mahahual/Majahual
& Quintana Roo South
What
is the Costa Maya? The area known as Costa Maya is the coastal
region of the Mexican Caribbean that extends from the border of the
Sian Ka'an in the north to Belize in the South.
What is the Gran-Costa Maya? The Gran-Costa Maya emcompases the entire Southern part of Quintana Roo South of Felipe Carrillo Puerto to the Belizean Border. It includes the Capital of the state, Chetumal and the town of Bacalar.
The area is changing
rapidly. Majahual's spelling has been changed on all government signs to Mahahual and is arguably the center of the Costa Maya. It has been welcoming cruise ships at the Puerto Costa Maya since
Dec. 2002 with shops and tourist activities. Other towns such as the
beautiful Bacalar with its
turquoise blue lake and Chetumal,
the capital of Quintana Roo,
are nearby and are worth visiting with very good concrete highways
to make the drive pleasurable and safe. Just watch the Topes!
