Maya Ruins > El Rey, Ruin in Cancun Hotel Zone |
||
|
El Rey is an extremely small ruin hardly worth the visit for its archaeological value, except in the middle of the Cancun hotel zone, it is a nice remembrance of who originally occupied this land. The main reason to visit the ruin is for the hundreds of iguanas that flee the grand hotels and find refuge here in the quiet and little visited ruins. Hours:
8:00 am- 5:00 PM |

El Rey doesn't have any large pyramids, only platforms with round columns that probably had palapa roofs at one time.
|
Not
only are there hundreds of iguanas, but they aren't afraid of humans.
Sunning themselves in the midst of the runs, you can get quite close
before they run for cover. The reason for this lack of fear is the fact
that the park administrators feed the iguanas tortillas. In fact they
very likely will do that while you are there. When you do, dozens will
come running from the holes in the rocks.

This little iguana climbs on the back of this bigger iguana who suns himself on the steps of a small stone building.
|
I'm
not sure what these two iguanas were fighting about. The park "ranger"
told us that the iguanas with the combs were males and the ones without
combs were females. Perhaps they were fighting over a woman.
