To Mayan Beach Garden From Cancun:

Take the main highway (307) south out of Cancun. The concrete highway follows the coast and continues to Tulum. After Tulum the road veers away from the coast and goes around the Sian Ka'an nature reserve. You'll note the landscape change as you drive closer to the jungle. Continue on to Filipe Carrillo Puerto. You can get gas in this town and take advantage of the wonderful snacks that the locals sell at the gas station. If you have time, stop at the market there, its a good example of a traditional Mexican market. Continue on 307 through the small town of Limones. Four kilometers past Limones, turn left to Mahahual at the Cafetal junction. It is well marked. Drive about 54 kilometers. Just past gas station (marked only by a mass of twisted aluminum), take the first road left which leads to Tampalam, Uvero and Placer. (NOTE: If you get all the way to the lighthouse, you've missed the turn off.) Follow the road about 22 kilometers until you see a sign to Placer. It will be the first paved road you will see for several kilometers. Turn right and go until the road ends. Turn right and follow the beach road about 3 kilometers further. Mayan Beach Garden will be on your left.

From Chetumal to Mayan Beach Garden:

Head West out of Chetumal until you reach highway 307. The road is well marked. Turn right and continue past Bacalar. You will come to the little town of Pedros Santos that has several topes with people selling fruit. Shortly after the little town you will see the turnoff to Mahahual. Turn right and drive about 54 kilometers. Drive about 54 kilometers. Road Conditions: (updated 20 - April -08)

  • There is construction between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. They are adding another 2 lanes and are almost finished. At different points in your trip, you will find the road switching from the old to the new. Please watch for these and slowdown when you see workers.
  • The highway south of Tulum is being widened. There isn't too much activity along this stretch, but the grading in some areas has obscured the white lines along the side of the road and made driving in the dark painful. If driving in the dark, please slow down and watch for pedestrians along this stretch who may be wearing dark clothing.
  • The road from junction at 307 to the turnoff to Mahahual is great but it is missing signs due to Dean!
  • The road to Tampalam is currently being tar and graveled, and all the signs are gone, including the sign to Tampalam. There are a couple of spots where Hurricane Dean ripped off pieces of blacktop but the compacted surface still has integrity - these are why the resurfacing project is going on. Please watch for this area and slow down a little especially in the soft gravel.
  • The beach road is pretty messed up by trucks delivering supplies for reconstruction but a normal car can navigate it easily - no four wheel drive required.
  • The road to and From Chetumal is a concrete highway with most of the signs intact -- just watch the Topes when you go through towns!!!
