The Costa Maya

What is the Costa Maya? The area known as Costa Maya is the coastal region of the Mexican Caribbean that extends from the border of the Sian Ka'an in the north to Belize in the South. The area is changing rapidly. Majahual, (also spelled Mahahual or Mahajual) is arguably the center of the Costa Maya, and has been welcoming cruise ships since Dec. 2002 with shops and tourist activities. Other towns such as the beautiful Bacalar with its turquoise blue lake and Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo, are not officially part of the Costa Maya, but are nearby and are worth visiting with very good concrete highways to make the drive pleasurable and safe.
